25 January 2017 - Chief of MI6 makes keynote address at the 2017 Women in IT Awards

It was with great pride that the Chief of MI6, Alex Younger, otherwise known as ‘C’, opened the 2017 Women in IT Awards event at the Grosvenor House Hotel on 25 January.

Recognised as the world’s largest technology diversity event, the Women in IT Awards seeks to tackle the technology industry’s gender imbalance by showcasing the achievements and innovation of women in technology, identifying new role models, and furthering dialogue around the importance of diversity among industry leaders and influencers.

In front of an audience which included some of the UK’s business, technology and innovation leaders ‘C’ said that MI6 were building a team of technology specialists in MI6 with a wide range of skills. He described the strengths that women could bring to the technology sector and the need for new talent and ideas to ensure that MI6 remained one of the world’s leading intelligence agencies.

Speaking at the event ‘C’ said:

“As the head of a human intelligence organisation that has technology right at its heart, I am delighted to have the opportunity to demonstrate my support for an event which recognises the outstanding contribution by women in the IT industry; a contribution I am determined to grow and enhance in MI6.  More broadly, this is an opportunity for me to dispel the myths that too often see people rule themselves out from applying to join MI6.  My message is a simple one; we need the best talent from the widest range of backgrounds to counter the threats facing this country and to seize the opportunities presented by modern technology.”

Now in its’s third year, the Women in IT Awards event is organised by Information Age and has steadily grown in significance so that Wednesday’s event saw nearly a thousand people from across a range of the UK’s leading business and technology companies witness some of the brightest and the best women in IT today being honoured for their achievements.
